Hollywood embraces adult advertising

Hollywood embraces adult advertising

We’ve got a winner! Or at least a realist. US movie makers and marketing teams are embracing adult sites to promote their blockbuster movies. This might just be the most effective campaign ever for a movie. Now it remains to be seen, how quick other movies and mainstream products and services will follow. I think you might just bump into John Doe on those sites that should be put behind a lock according to some.

Facebook is testing face detection

Posted July 5th, 2010, 14:12 by Ania

fb-face

Facebook is about to implement changes into photos management around their service.

The huge step forward is making friend’s selections process automatically. You don’t have to click each time in a photo to tag your friend on the one you’ve just uploaded. Facebook will be making it in the background after upload is done. You will receive photos with previously detected faces and you’ll be able to choose whose’s on the photo using Facebook’s prompt.

You will save your time for searching through yours or friend’s photos to find yourself on them. What’s more, there is always an other side – scanning your face process is combined with collecting really worthful data base from marketing point of view. All Facebook adds will be adjusted and oriented on you – if you have e.g. oval face you will be presented with such adds (e.g. cosmetics) covering your shape.

Trends in making websites in 2010

farm2

I’ve (willy-nilly) read recently “What the world needs now is an epic win!” and can 100% affirm there are some common parts with my studies background and Jesse about online gaming and websites. I’m not a big fan of optimistic Jesse’s vision about changing the world through games and it’s the only thing I can’t agree right now with her.

It’s a common knowledge that all of us have a “second life” which can be called an online one. The trigger to keep gaming or using website is not the thing that we can make a world better. The big thing is to show users a part of real life plus a hidden promise – “you will win if” … If you harvest a tree or plow the land on a FamVille. Those are small steps but you can always get a price and achieve higher level.

What more, see what your friends have on their farm. They have some exclusive decorations which they have paid for. If you want to have the same (and certainly you do), pay for that too.

There are lots of examples you can find about philosophy of buying and why we buy products.

Buy – ology - Truth and Lies About Why We Buy and Call of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping by the Author of Why We Buy

If you show everyone that something is exclusive and unique you can have 100% it will be sold. There was a shop which link I can’t find now where someone was making exclusive etuis on a cellphone and was selling only one per week. What was happening? Everyone was waiting when this etui will be released to sell. It took only 3 seconds to sell this thing for enormous amount after product was published online. Exclusive means I’ll be the one who will have it.

But returning to online games, it’s not an extension of our “offline” life as Jesse said. It’s a substitute which can alientate us from society. Those games which serves you as much things you have in common with your real life can replace you it. The success of online gaming is to create microlife and place it online. To achieve this you have to base your knowledge on mental models which we all are using in a real life just because it’s a part of our behaviour.

How do you think Apple has achieved so big success with iBooks? Just because it was based on a metaphor of our real life. We all have a book shelf at home so we get used to it. It’s obvious that user don’t have to learn iBooks and how to navigate through it because he knows it from his real (offline) life.

That’s why in this year we have a trend in making websites based on metaphor of our real life, it’s the same with games.

Facebook Privacy

Posted May 13th, 2010, 07:48 by Richard

Do not hide, share!

Do not hide, share!

The Facebook privacy policy is way longer than the US constitution. I am not sure if it is also longer than the EU “constitution”. But since Facebook opened up a lot of its information to make new ways of networking online possible, a lot of protests have started. Some groups are concerned that their privacy is at stake. And it is true that if you like to have the highest possible privacy of your information on Facebook you have to push and change a lot of buttons. But it is possible to do.

The real question here is again, what is the core concern here? I think the issue is that there are people trying to keep things the way they are, and people who want to push things further opening up new ways, new methods, new options. Why be on Facebook and then be concerned about privacy? It is like complaining there is nothing going on on TV in the old days, there is an off-button too! If you are concerned about privacy it does not really make sense to be on Facebook, or even be on the internet. Ask the Chinese how you can control mediums. It is a day task.

I believe that Facebook is really open that they are changing and it is positive to see that they are morphing so quickly in new forms continuously. That is the model of the future, always change, always adapt, always try new things. Staying the same, being predictable, and becoming obsolete is a dead concept. The only constant is change. Be part of it, or do not participate and live in your castle mesmerizing about the good old days. The future can be so exciting, just do not be afraid.

Limewire Squeezed

A big hit was given to Limewire, a peer to peer service to share files. The US court decided that they do not prevent their users enough from sharing illegal files. Illegal files in this case are for instance music mp3’s that you make available for others to download.

All Limewire did is put in their service statement that it is forbidden to download such files. Since Grokster got condemned most sharing services stopped or changed their service. Limewire did not do more than make statements in their policy.

Still it feels like the state of Holland is being punished because people get murdered on its territory, and that putting in Dutch law that murder is forbidden is simply not enough. Bit sour comparison, but I feel that the public idea about the concept of copyright etc has changed enormously since the internet has been widely used.

Facebook in Nederland

Facebook in Nederland 2010

Facebook in Nederland 2010
